Title Springfield bayonet
Nationality American
Period 1917
Sold

This bayonet is a prime example of the Lend Lease deal between the UK and the USA in 1940 - part of the near obsolete weapons that America shipped to Britain in her darkest hour after Dunkirk. The leather frog is stamped 'HG' (Home Guard) and dated 1940; the blade is Remington maker marked at the forte and clearly dated 1917.

Both frog and scabbard have been blackened to accord with British practice. Most of the original blue finish on the hilt is intact. The grips are nice dark-stained walnut.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!

Found the item a little on the expensive side and a bit disappointed that you were unwilling to bend a bit on the price of the Officer's Tunic Eagle (half the fun of buying, after all, is the haggling), but impressed by the speed of delivery and the quality of the item. Was well worth it in the long run...
