This rare bayonet was made by Simson & Co of Suhl, Saxony, for export to Portugal. Simson was well known for its exports to South America and Portugal. The pommel is marked up in the manner of a Portuguese piece and there is a small acceptance stamp on the crossguard in the form of the Portuguese cross (missing two parts). The small acceptance stamp is on the obverse side of the guard and the serial number on the pommel, preceded by a letter, and it almost certainly relates to the rifle serial number. The later Third Reich period exports, Portuguese contract pieces, also have rifle serial numbers stamped on the pommel in this manner. It is mounted in a German style frog and its condition is good for its age. There are, however, extensive traces of lacquer to the top of the scabbard, which I have left on account of their proximity to the frog. |
