Title P13/14 bayonet
Nationality British
Period c 1917
Sold

This was for the for the British Enfield rifle, made in .303 in the US factories, whose production of these rifles reached 1.25 million by April 1917 when British contracts ceased. The stock was made in one piece, unlike the SMLE rifle.

The rifles were made by Remington and Winchester for the UK government. This bayonet is stamped Remington 1913 at the forte, together with an issue date of August 1917 (8/17). On the other side there is a cancelled UK inspection stamp with a lightly stamped 'US'. It was introduced into service in June 1916.

This example has a P17 US scabbard, with an English leather frog (broad arrow stamp), strongly indicative of Home Guard use in WW2. The original scabbard would have been the SMLE pattern with a frog stud. Perhaps this saw service with US troops in WW1 and was then given a fresh scabbard and ultimately shipped back to UK under the Lend/Lease programme of US aid in WW2. Hence the English frog!

Its condition is excellent throughout, with most of the original factory blue on the hilt and all of the Parkerised finish on the blade.
