This is the classic purpose built socket bayonet for the Martini. The rifles were carried in the Zulu War of 1879 and later on the Sudan campaigns in the 1880s and was the standard rifle until the replacement by the Lee-Metford in the late 1880s. It has the usual WD stamp with broad arrow on hilt and scabbard, as well as the out of service broad arrows in the same places. There is an Enfield inspection stamp at the forte, together with a rifle number, now crossed out. The leather scabbard is in quite good shape, complete with its brass mounts, and the seam is intact on the reverse. The hilt has 30% or so of its bluing left, with a lightly corroded finish. There are old scattered minor corrosion marks throughout the blade, with a bigger patch down at the forte, but it has been carefully cleaned by hand. |
