Title K98 Mauser bayonet, R A Herder, matching numbers
Nationality German
Period 1941
Sold

This was the classic companion for the Landser (the German squaddie) through all their European and Russian battle tours from 1939-45 and is the development of the S98/84 bayonet from WW1. This example has matching numbers to the scabbard and blade and is clearly maker marked at the scabbard throat and the forte of the blade.

The blade appears to have been sharpened a little (viz some minor scratch marks on the obverse), although not excessively. It has 90% of its original blue finish and the scabbard also has much of its original blue finish. However, the scabbard has some severe dents and a little surface rust. There are a few pinprick dents to the flash guard at the back of the hilt. The grips are a purply-black bakelite.

The condition of the piece is reflected in the price.

A quick note to let you know I received the two painted truncheons today and both arrived in good nick!

I'm very pleased with them and they will be a nice addition to my collection!

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
