This is a nice early war example (dated '40' for 1940 at the top of the blade) of the classic Third Reich combat bayonet, which fitted on the standard Kar.98 Third Reich rifle. It has the dark bakelite grips of the early war period, later replaced with brick red bakelite with a sawdust element to prevent frost cracking on the Russian Front. This is a clean example, with most of its original blue finish on the blade and traces at the top of the scabbard. There is some minor age patination to the hilt and scabbard. The scabbard is a mismatch with the hilt, having a different number, a fairly common occurence, but is dated 1937 and maker coded S/174.The scabbard throat screw is missing. |
