The real interest of this bayonet is the metal scabbard. Most of these bayonets have leather and iron ones, but for some reason the artillery were issued with polished iron examples. The rarity ratio of iron scabbards is 1:10 against leather examples. The maker's mark at the forte of the blade is 'P.D.L.' for Luneschloss of Solingen. This is probably a volunteer example, there being no other marks except for a weapon number 49 on the pommel. The grips are pressed chequered leather and, apart from some age related shrinkage, are still in quite crisp shape. The scabbard has been nickel plated at some point, which has largely been removed, leaving traces of the underlying copper finish in patches, especially near the mouth of the scabbard. The muzzle ring diameter is 21 mm and the fitting is of the bar on barrel variety. The blade (58 cm long) has some patches of pitting on both sides of the last six inches to the point. The rest of the weapon is in reasonable condition with a hand-polished metal finish. |
