This was the bayonet for the 1866 model bolt action rifle, the first in the French Army service, which saw extensive use in the Franco-Prussian war and later in France's colonial wars in Indo-China and Africa. This has matching numbers to scabbard and hilt and a clean blade marked 'Mre d'Armes de St Etienne 1873'. The blade is a little bit on the scruffy side, having suffered some surface rust and subsequently been cleaned. However, the scabbard has a nice brown patina to it, which might even be the original finish. |
