Title Bayonet for Chassepot rifle, model 1866
Nationality French
Period 1869
Sold

This bayonet is the classic French sidearm used in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71. It was the first breech-loading rifle carried by the French army, a basic bolt action with no magazine. This was made at St Etienne, a French arsenal (see back of blade for details).

The rear quillan or barrel slot has been bent some 15 degrees out of true - through combat? - or just general abuse. Otherwise, this bayonet is in fine condition.

The dirk arrived this morning and I could not be happier with it! Excellent little piece, most unusual... I look forward to doing more business with you, as finance permits; rest assured you will be highly recommended to my collecting colleagues.
