ephemera

Contemporary magazines, drill manuals, regimental and unit histories, photos and photograph albums, postcards, drawings and prints, army lists (of officers, principally American, British, French and German). My personal interest here is in Napoleonic era prints and drawings of uniform studies.

Here is a selection of militaria from this category:

militaria item Sepia photo of an Italian mountain battery
- British
This sepia photograph, pasted on a card page torn from a British military album, shows a battery of Italian mountain artillery in front of their barracks - 'Caserma Alfonso La-Marmora' (Rome). They appear to be in tropical kit, as many of them are wearing white foreign service helmets, with saddlery, ammunition boxes and guns in the foreground.

militaria item Historique du 19e Regiment de Dragons 1793-1913
- French
This superb regimental history has six colour plates, with many black and white illustrations, as well as photographs and prints of commanding officers. It was privately published in 1945 by J.A. Sauzey, the author, and limited to 495 copies, of which 29 examples were a special edition. This is example number 276. There are 316 pages.

militaria item Letter from Sachsenhausen concentration camp
- German
This is a rare surviving letter in German from Gustav Salek, possibly a Czech political prisoner, in Sachsenhausen concentration camp. It is dated 21 April 1940 and I have translated it below - please excuse any mistakes, as German is not my mother tongue.

militaria item Shoe buckle, silver
- French
This is a silver buckle (62mm across) dating from c 1770 on stylistic grounds. There is a 19th-century French purity stamp (.800) in the shape of a boar's head punch, introduced in 1838 for all silver being sold openly in the marketplace or a shop.

militaria item Sepia photo of a company of Bersaglieri (Italian)
- British
This sepia photograph, pasted on a card page torn from a British military album, shows a company of this famous Italian light infantry unit, complete with their bugle section and officers standing in front of double files of men.

testimonials

The package arrived today, and the two items are nice. The Mother Cross actually looks a lot better in person than in the pics.

The goods are safely in and I am delighted. Many thanks for the outstanding handling of this order and I hope we can do many more.
