Title K98 combat bayonet by Eickhorn, matching numbers
Nationality German
Period 1939
Price £200.00

This is the classic Wehrmacht combat bayonet of the Third Reich era, carried by all combat units, although the brown frog would suggest Luftwaffe or perhaps early Kriegsmarine use. Carl Eickhorn is perhaps the most well known of the Solingen cutlers of the era.

The weapon number is 4091e, stamped on the blade and the front of the scabbard. Matching number bayonets are increasingly hard to find!

The grips are bakelite. Someone has used the wrong screw driver to strip the grip bolts, but otherwise the overall shape is good. Much blue finish remains on the blade, rather less on the hilt. The scabbard has a mixed patina/blue finish. The brown combat frog is missing the securing strap and the leather has been torn from the rivets at both sides, with a further small tear by the top of the frog stud. The reverse of the frog shows traces of a lacquer-like finish which I've seen on black combat frogs before but not on a brown one. There are some minor dents to the flash guard where it has been used as a hammer.
