The scabbard has a maker's mark under the lip of the throat mount and numerous French import marks, as well as having its original wooden liners. The scabbard, the hilt mounts and the carrying rings are deeply engraved. There is a virtually perfect rosewood grip. The unusual feature is the 'murder' hole pierced at the forte of the blade. 'Murder' holes replaced arrow slits in castles in the 15th century when primitive handguns came into service. Why this device appears in a dagger blade is a mystery, unless there is some esoteric Islamic explanation which I have missed. The condition throughout is excellent for its age, with some minor wear and tear to the blade, as one would expect. |
