This is a die-struck badge in gilding metal (50mm high) and was the standard badge for the tail end of the pre-war period and during WW1. A similar example was struck in white metal. The SY was first raised in 1794, disbanded in 1848 and later raised again in 1901. It amalgamated with the Sussex Yeomanry in 1922, forming two batteries of field guns as part of a four-battery unit, the 98th (Surrey & Sussex Yeomanry) Brigade, RFA. It served with distinction in both world wars. There is some minor distortion to the badge and the lugs through age and use, and a small chunk at the top left hand edge of the reverse has been folded over, giving it a slightly bruised appearance. |
