This force was formed in 1906, headed by Inspector-General of Police Johnstone, and performed paramilitary duties. In 1930, the Southern and Northern forces amalgamated when the Nigerian Police Force came into existence, with headquarters in Lagos. The strength of the unit in 1907 was 1,122 rank and file, with 12 African and 10 European officers. This unit saw combat with the West African Frontier Force in the Cameroon Campaign of August 1914. This is a die-struck badge from white metal, which would have been worn probably on a black pouch belt by the officers of the unit. It may have had a backing plate. |
