This badge was designed for the solar topee that the Royal Marines adopted in 1905 to replace the blue cloth helmet of the Victorian and early Edwardian era. The badge is still worn today on the Royal Marine Band headdress but with a Queen's crown and, I believe, in a staybrite format. Note that the bugle horn of the previous badge was dropped on this pattern. This is a die-struck gilding metal badge, virtually as struck. The lugs on the reverse would appear to be electrically brazed, viz pink soldering, which probably dates it as being later rather than earlier, perhaps late 1930s. |
