Title Prussian navy cutlass
Nationality German
Period 1861
Sold

This rare example, with most of its original black paint to the hilt and the top scabbard mount, is dated 1861 with Prussian inspection stamps and is maker-marked for P.D. Lunenschloss of Solingen. This was the first pattern cutlass for the infant Prussian navy of the mid-19th century.

The scabbard has shrunk, preventing blade entering last inch or so. There may be some organic material blocking the bottom end of the scabbard as comparison of blade and scabbard length match. There are several small nicks to the blade, which has extensive polishing marks. The bulk of the grip wire is missing.
