This is a gunner's 'walking out' hanger, akin in purpose to the dress bayonets of the Third Reich era, ie to be worn with dress uniform when not on duty in barracks. The issue version of this weapon was a much more substantial affair, although both continued in use throughout WW1. The mounts are brass, with a good leather scabbard, and the blade (just over 19" long, without any maker's logo) is copiously engraved with military trophies, strap and floral work for some 11" on both sides. As to faults, the staple on the top mount could do with tightening up and there are some bruises on the back of the hilt. There are a couple of small dents to teh face of the bottom chape. Otherwise, it is in excellent shape. |
