These are from the era of the Fascist regime in Croatia, which supported the Nazis in their administration of the Balkans, the key motif being the running Celtic-style strapwork on the buckles and the clips. They would have been worn by Croatian army officers when Yugoslavia broke up under Nazi pressure and a separate Croatian state was formed. They appear to be made of leather with an off-white silk (?) fabric applied to the face. The buckles are of electro-plated nickel silver finish on some form of base metal. There do not appear to be any maker marks anywhere, but they are in reasonable condition with a little green verdigris here and there. The dirk for these straps is rare enough, but you very rarely see the straps themselves. |
