This, I am fairly sure, is an Austrian example, though there is an outside chance that it could be generic, produced for both Austrian and German veterans. There is apparently a Hungarian example, very similar to this but with Hungarian wording on the cross and more detail, which makes it more likely that this badge is Austrian. There is a silver (I don't know if it is true silver or not - too small to be hallmarked) helmet and sword pinned on top of the shield. It measures just over 2cm long and, apart from some wear to the gilding, is in pretty good shape for its age, with a little crackelure to the enamel. |
