This is a pressed bronze badge, showing an eagle pierced by a lightning bolt symbolising the power of the anti-aircraft battery, with the monogram 'Lfa'. It commemorated the motorised field-gun units, which most armies had in WW1 to combat the air arm. Typically these badges were sold to raise money for the widows and orphans of the relevant units and were normally worn on the left-hand side of the Austrian field cap. Sometimes as many as six were worn all together. The condition is fine for its age, though it now has a dark patina front and back. The pin on the reverse is missing. There is a little discolouration in the form of some verdigris spots on the eagle's feathers, which could be removed with a sharp implement. |
