This enamelled officer's badge would have been worn by personnel serving at the Grimmenstein Sanatorium in 1917. It is a magnificent example of what perhaps is the earliest display of Art Deco motif, predating the widespread use of this sort of imagery by some years. It measures 3.3cm long and would appear to be constructed of gilding metal, silvered, with a black enamel design. It is marked on the reverse 'Reinermer & Spiegel Wien 7/2'.Grimmenstein is in the district of Neuenkirchen, Lower Austria, near Hungary. Most of the silver finish on the front has worn down to the original base metal, hence the slightly pinky-goldy colour. The back has most of its original silver finish intact. |
