Title Kriegsmarine ORs cap insignia
Nationality German
Period 1936-45
Sold

There are good pre-war photos showing this in use, viz the Graf Spee's world cruise, for instance. U-boat crews would always wear these at formal events such as the Indienstellung (commissioning) of their boat, reverting to the schiffchen (fore and aft cap) for regular service use.

This (just over 5cm wingspan) was worn on both the winter (navy blue) and summer (white top) navy cap, copied, of course, from our own Royal Navy! There is a 4cm pin fitted at the back for insertion in the cap. The backing of the cockade appears to be organic, possibly leather or card.

It would appear to be made of zinc and is in excellent condition, apart from the loss of gilding to the eagle and silver finish of the cockade. Zinc has the unfortunate property of absorbing any surface plating into itself, hence the lack of finish.

Prov: from the J.R. Gaunt & Son Ltd. Pattern Book Archive, sold at auction by order of the National Army Museum, London.

Sword arrived today. Fabulous. This is an excellent example of a fighting sword of its period, and a real gem. The 1828 Pattern is such a gorgeous sword, and this is a fine example. Even my bride is impressed and she doesn’t really get swords.
