Title Kriegsmarine ORs cap insignia
Nationality German
Period 1936-45
Sold

There are good pre-war photos showing this in use, viz the Graf Spee's world cruise, for instance. U-boat crews would always wear these at formal events such as the Indienstellung (commissioning) of their boat, reverting to the schiffchen (fore and aft cap) for regular service use.

This (just over 5cm wingspan) was worn on both the winter (navy blue) and summer (white top) navy cap, copied, of course, from our own Royal Navy! There is a two-inch pin fitted at the back for insertion in the cap. There is no cockade, which would have been attached separately to the cap.

It would appear to be made of tin (magnet test), with a gilt wash, and is in excellent condition, with a little bleeding to the gilt finish.

Prov: from the J.R. Gaunt & Son Ltd. Pattern Book Archive, sold at auction by order of the National Army Museum, London.
