This is an Eickhorn example (marked at the forte) with an engraved brightwork blade. These were worn by senior petty officers right through to admirals in the sea-going navy, seen as a more convenient sidearm than the traditional sword. It has an early pattern aluminium bullion knot, as opposed to the later rayon variety. These dirks were a continuation of the tradition of the Imperial and Weimar navies, the Weimar example differing only in the use of a flame pommel, whereas the Imperial ones had the Imperial crown on the pommel and normally had ivory grips. The scabbard, apart from a small dent on the reverse, is in very good condition, having most of its original gilding and varnish. The hilt fittings likewise have virtually all their gilding intact. The grip wire is original, as is the grip (white plastic on a wooden core). The blade is virtually factory new, apart from a little finger marking at the forte. |
