This German-made sabre was carried by the Savoy Heavy Cavalry in the war against Austria in 1866. It is maker marked 'ZL' in a small square punch applied on the drag, forte and rear of the guard, together with an 'S' in a circle (for Savoy?). The Light Cavalry had a sabre with a simple 'D' guard. This is almost certainly a Solingen product, but by a maker I cannot trace. The blade (35.25" blade, 1.30" wide at the forte) has a very light mottled age patina and has been professionally sharpened some 10" from the forte on the leading edge and for some 6/7" on the reverse at the point. The scabbard throat has been riveted in position and there is a well executed brazing seam on the reverse leading edge of the scabbard. |
