This classic sabre was made in Germany for the Italians (maker's mark ZL to forte in small oblong punch, also on the guard and scabbard) and could have been used against the Austrians in northern Italy in the wars of the 1860s. This is the typical high quality Solingen export product of the period. This model has a single ring as opposed to twin carrying rings which is more normally encountered, but it is undoubtedly the correct scabbard for the sword, viz the maker's mark. It has a good leather grip with all its original brass wire. There would appear to be unit markings (a three-digit number) punched into the rear of the guard. The pommel nut is slightly askew, but as this is a screw thread fit it could easily be adjusted. The whole sword has clearly been stripped at some point and carefully cleaned. The condition generally is excellent. |
