This classic sabre was made in Germany for the Italians (faint maker's mark to forte in small oblong punch) and could have been used against the Austrians in northern Italy in the wars of the 1860s. The hilt has been silver plated at some point and subsequently polished off, although traces of the finish remain. There may also be some traces of silver plating to the blade. The grip leather has some minor losses at the base of the hilt, but the original wiring survives. The top ring on the scabbard may be a contemporary replacement, as it is a closed circle with a gap at the join and doesn't measure up to the exact size of the other (original) ring. The whole sword has been professionally polished at some point with minor patination showing to the pommel. |
