Title Gurkha kukri
Nationality Nepalese
Period c 1880
Sold

This high quality kukri is typical of the type carried by the Gurkhas in the second Afghan War of 1879. The carved decorative feature in the centre of the grip is one clue to the age, along with its shortness (only 3.5" including the iron ferrule).

The blade (just under 12.5" or, more accurately, 31 cm long) is of extremely high quality, having two small fullers at the back and two wide ones throughout the length of the blade. There is some minor surface patination and small striations throughout. The hilt is rosewood, and appears to have been made in two pieces, but both would appear to be contemporary. There is a little bit of damage to the central raised band on the hilt. There is no scabbard.

The condition for the age of the piece is good, but it has had a reasonably hard life, viz minor hammer marks about 4" from the point on the back of the blade.

My order arrived this morning, thanks for the prompt delivery.

Two excellent original pieces, I must say.

Buckle is in minty condition retaining so much detail esp plummage on eagle's neck and chest, like to see those 'creases' on the legs also... a beautiful example of an early O&C buckle.

Belt is very interesting, rather thin, CROUPON stamped and also behind the tongue...maybe Allegmeine but no SS markings as you state. Beautiful piece none the less.

Thanks for a speedy transaction Chris, I am very happy with my purchase :)
