This classic knife, with a 15 cm blade, was made at Solingen-Foche by Gottlieb Hammesfahr, one of the oldest Solingen blade makers. This example, with its fruitwood grip, must not be confused with the Indian copy with rosewood grip plates, as retailed by WWA in Birmingham. This is the real deal! The leather straps of the scabbard have suffered with age and some moth damage. The blade has been field sharpened with a grindstone on one side and there are old bruises to the back of the blade (from use as a hammer?). There is an ordnance inspection stamp (crown over gothic 'C'). The scabbard paint appears to be an old refinish (for WW2?). I've left the iron work of the hilt with a light russet finish, as I found it. |
