Title Georgian cushion-pommel sabre by Wooley of Birmingham
Nationality British
Period c 1785
Sold

This is a typical junior officer's sword of the 1780s, carried both by army and naval personnel. The blade is stamped 'Wooley' at the base of the forte and engraved 'Wooley' on the base of the spine. The hilt is brass with an ebony grip. The scabbard has gilding metal mounts.

There is some minor distortion at the top of the guard, where it joins the hilt. The grip shows some age wear but is not split in any part - ebony grips are quite prone to splitting. The 27.75" double-fullered blade shows typical age wear, but retains most of its original shape, losing some definition at the point. The blade has a patina of light pitting overall, now mostly polished out. The top scabbard mount has been damaged and repaired along the brazing seam. The seam of the scabbard has opened and been skilfully repaired with thin metal pins throughout its length. The blade does not appear to have been remounted. There is a narrow 2" split in the bottom chape on the leading edge. The leather has extensive crackelure overall.
