The award was given for combat gallantry and the German inscription on the reverse reads 'for bravery'. These copies were made for the soldier to wear on his uniform for everyday use, while keeping the best one for special occasions. This particular example is struck in brass and heavily silver plated. It is the large version and measures 42mm in diameter. One noticeable feature is the absence of the sculptor's initials on the bust of the emperor, together with a slight lack of definition of his uniform, indicating that it is a copy piece. The condition is excellent for its age and the piece has been laquered. The brass shows through at various points on the rim, more on the reverse than the obverse, reflecting regular everyday wear. The ribbon is original but somewhat soiled with age. |
