The 88th became the 1st Battalion of the Connaught Rangers in 1881, being raised in 1793 as this regiment and fighting with great distinction throughout the Peninsula War. This is the more impressive of the two 88th badges, the other one being the so-called 'skeleton' pattern without a wreath. The badge is die-struck in brass and would have been worn right through the Zulu War where the 88th saw service in 1879. The general condition is excellent, though the reverse could do with a good clean to remove the excess metal polish and other gunk. |
