The 7th is the descendant of a group of Rajput regiments which were first raised in 1798, though the regiment claims to go back to 1778, with a common ancestor in the old Bengal Native Infantry. There were some ten battalions of this unit serving in WW1, though, as the 7th Rajputs, they were only formed from the earlier components in 1922. This is a casting from bazaar silver. The two lugs at the rear have been chopped down and a pin fitting introduced (now defective) for wear either on a pugree (tropical helmet) or as a sweetheart broach for an officer's wife/girlfriend. The fittings for the pin are there, but the pin itself is missing. It is 32mm high. |
