This is a silver (not hallmarked) plaid brooch (2 7/8 inches diameter), which would have been worn by the officers of the 79th Highlanders throughout the last half of the 19th century. This was worn to secure the plaid worn over the shoulder in full dress and, in the early years at least, in fighting order. An evocative piece of Highland regalia. The brooch itself shows remarkably little wear, evidence perhaps of being kept in its box (which is now sadly missing) for most of its life. |
