Title 1st Carlist War shako plate
Nationality Spanish
Period c 1833-40
Sold

The 1st Carlist War in Spain lasted from 1833 to approximately 1840. It was the first of Spain's many Carlist wars, spanning the mid-19th century. Many English volunteers served in these wars and many of the badges were made in England, belt plates and shako plates in particular and this is almost certainly an English product.

From its appearance, it is an other ranks plate and would have been worn on a typical bell-top shako of the period.

It is a die-struck piece (8.5 x 9.5cm) in two parts, the central coat of arms sweated on to the laurel wreath at its base. The wreath is somewhat buckled on both sides and two of the three copper loops on the reverse are bent over. Otherwise, it is in quite good shape for its age. A rare survivor of other rank material from this era.

Prov: from the J.R. Gaunt & Son Ltd. Pattern Book Archive, sold at auction by order of the National Army Museum, London.
