This pass, accompanied by a loose insert which credits him with service in Russia from 22.6.41 to 13.1.42 with Anti-tank Battalion 42/1st Company, records Spangenberg's service together with his awards, namely the Assault Award, EK2 and the Ostmedaille. There are plenty of details on his general service and background. The photograph, signed by him across the base, is in good shape. He came from Muhlhausen in Saxony. He served in Russia with the 7th Panzer Division, Rommel's old unit from the glory days in France. He wound up, after being wounded in January 1942, in Russia, serving at Carentan in France in 1943. He would appear to have survived the war and served with various anti-tank units throughout the war. The condition is as one would expect for a document of this sort, which was carried at all times on the person for ID in case of POW status or serious wounds/death. |
