'SADDLER SERJ. J. CLARKE, 10TH ROYAL REG. HUSSARS'. James Clarke is confirmed on the roll for the 10th (The Prince of Wales' Own Royal) Hussars as the only man bearing the rank of Saddler Serjeant in this Regiment at Waterloo. With copy of medal roll and service papers; also with original split ring suspender. The medal has some contact wear. GVF.

He was born in Birmingham; enlisted in the 10th 8.12.93; served in 1808, 1809, 1813/14 in the Peninsula; entitled to an MGS medal (bars Sahagun & Benevente, Vittoria, & Toulouse); discharged 30.11.18; probably awarded pension 17.2.19; general conduct described as good. He was discharged 'in consequence of being subject to attacks of rheumatism, since he was exposed to wet, cold and fatigue on service in the Peninsula during the Campaign of 1809-13-14'. He was granted two years' service (towards pension) for Waterloo. The strength of the regiment on the day was 390 men, of whom there were 94 casualties, including 40 other ranks wounded and 26 missing.
