Title Union Hall tipstaff for Southwark, London
Nationality British
Period c 1795
Sold

A rare example of a 1792-instituted London police officer's tipstaff, it is sadly not personally attributable. It is engraved 'POLICE OFFICE // UNION HALL' on the brass barrel, which is somewhat pickled and patinated with age. Union Hall was in Southwark, South London, between Lambeth and the river Thames.

There are quite severe perishing cracks at the junction of the grip and the base of the metalwork. There is a replacement purple velvet cushion inside the crown. The barrel is loosely attached to the grip with some modern paper, forming a friction fit. This is easily removable.

Thanks very much for the bayonet. I am very happy, I think your photos of your items are great because nothing is hidden and you can clearly see them. (Unlike some other dealers.) Everything was as you describe, I will be keeping a eye on your site for any further bayonets for my collection.
