This is the swan's feather plume for the foreign service or the Wolesley helmet, often seen worn by political officers and senior military commanders at parades in tropical places. These were worn right up to 1939 and I've even seen a photograph of an equerry of Princess Margaret wearing one in the 1950s on a visit to Jamaica. The swan's feathers are in reasonably good shape with a little fraying to the top, as you would expect from the age of the piece. The tin has much of its original red and brown speckled paintwork, but it has obviously had some abuse in its day. |
