This is the top finial for the infantry officer's Home Service helmet, worn between 1871 and 1914. The Home Service helmet was made of cork and covered in blue cloth or sometimes dark green or grey wool with a linen lining. These helmets were influenced in their design by the Prussian picklehaube of the 19th century. The screw thread is still reasonably sharp. There has been a minor repair (involving lead solder) to the base of the spike. I suspect the gilt finish to be of relatively recent origin. |
