This is a German contract buckle made for the Turkish army from about 1895 onwards, when the German and Austrian arms contracts started replacing British and French ones. The Turkish army continued to wear these buckles into the 1960s. The face plate is brass with a nickel centre soldered to it. There is a small dent to the top left hand side and the usual assortment of small scratches and dings throughout, but generally speaking it is in good shape. NB: This has a natural shine which isn't replicated in the photograph, which was taken to illustrate the condition of the metal. |
