This rare lithograph (30 x 40 cms), from the Crimean War period, is of a senior officer and subaltern from one of the most elite of the Russian Guard regiments, the personal bodyguard of the Tsar and the equivalent of the Prussian Garde du Corps. Unlike the Prussian helmet, which had a single head, the Russian helmet was surmounted by the double-headed eagle, clearly visible. There is substantial damage to the edges of the print, but it has the Russian and French language titles underneath the image. The French (bottom right) says: 'OFFICIER SUPERIEUR due regiment // des Chevaliers Gardes // OFFICIER SUBALTERNE du regiment // des Gardes a Cheval // (En grande tenue) // 15 Mars 1855'. |
