Embossed 'RECRUIT' on the reverse under NRA, these medals, I suspect, were given to new recruits in the volunteer rifle regiments raised in the 1860s on completion of a musketry course. The box is a dark maroon leatherette finish, with a small tear to the corner by the hinge. The imperial crown with the letters VR below are gold blocked to the silk lining of the lid, with 'BY APPOINTMENT // ELKINGTON & Co', the makers, below that. The use of the imperial crown suggests a post-1871 date, when Queen Victoria received this crown from the princes of India (at Disraeli's request) when they elected her Empress of India. The medal measures 33mm and is in virtually EF condition. |
