This typical Landsknecht item would have been worn by Spanish, German and Swiss infantry throughout the middle years of the 16th century with a half armour (ie breast, back, tassets, burgonet, arm defences and gauntlets). Importantly, there is a reasonably clear Nuremberg armourer's mark on the face of the gorget at lower left. It measures 5.75" high and nearly 12" across. There are striations throughout, always a good sign on munition pieces! There is a modern patch at the neck on the right, with a short 1.75" of replacement rolled edge and a modern patch to the left of the lower facing plate. It has been re-leathered with black calf. The interior has been lacquered black over an old russet finish. |
