Throughout the first half of the 1860s, the New Zealand Wars were fought to wrest political control from the Maoris and settle the islands with British people. As Victorian miniatures go, this is one of the rarer examples. There is deep tarnish on the front of the medal, while the back is a lighter colour; perhaps it has been sitting in a case.
