This would have been worn over a stout buff leather coat, together with a backplate and 'lobster pot' helmet, by the cavalry of both sides in the English Civil War 1643-53. Only the breastplate and helmet skull were shot proof. This is marked with the helmeted 'A' of the London Armourer's Company and the cross of St. George.(Parliament's army). It weighs approximately 4 kilos. The whole piece is covered in old varnish, a very thick finish, especially on the front. I have removed a small patch of this under the neck to reveal the armourer's marks. |
