This rare survivor has the silver U-boat flotilla badge on the side: a twin-tailed mermaid (maker marked), the hair highlighted in gilt, a very fine casting. This is the classic hat worn both by other ranks and officers at sea in the U-boats, with the gold bullion piping denoting officer rank. Its overall condition is excellent for its age, but there is some minor damage to the blue-grey leather sweatband, which has the initials 'K.M.S.' punched into it. It may be possible to identify the mermaid badge, but I have not been able to find this badge in an excellent book in which the drawings of U-boat badges by Georg Hogel, who made a life-long study of them, have been published - 'Embleme Wappen Malings deutscher U-boote 1939-1945' (Koehlers Verlagsgesellschaft MBH, Herford). |
