This somewhat damaged piece is a rare survivor of a strange design which resurfaces in the 18 and 19th centuries in silver, in England at any rate. The rowel spur first appeared in the 14th century and normally had fixed arms as opposed to hinged ones. One arm has been broken and then brazed together, so the hinge no longer works. Being a ground find, there are scattered patches of heavy pitting, now cleaned out, and the rowel has seized in the shank and no longer runs free. |
