This medal commemorates the retirement of William Gladstone from the House of Commons in 1894. He had been Prime Minister four times and, along with Disraeli, he created the modern Conservative party. There is a 50-line inscription on the reverse, listing the MPs of 1894. It is by Messrs L.C. Lauer and it was struck by J. Rochelle Thomas. It is a heavy bronze die-struck medal, measuring 9.5cm in diameter. Its condition is virtually EF, with a little finger marking here and there, most of which I have managed to remove with a little white spirit. It is in the original red morocco case, with a blue velvet base and a white silk lining to the lid. There is typical age wear to the corners of the case and a little scuffing and age marking here and there. The silk lining is slightly stained and yellowed with age. |
