Title Full dress army officer's cap
Nationality Japanese
Period c 1930s
Sold

This hat is in exceptionally clean condition, having seen very little service use and been preserved in its original card box, with separate card containers for the plume. The design dates from the 1890s and was heavily influenced by US uniform. It would have been worn on parade occasions with the full dress uniform, which was dark blue to match.

The colours of the plume, of course, represent the rising sun of Japan. The lining would appear to be silk, with the officer's name painted in white. The sweat band is leather, as are the peak and chin strap.

There is a little age crazing on the peak, something you would expect on a piece of this vintage. It appears to be a fine dark blue melton wool cloth. The condition throughout is superb for its age, though the box has a few dings, tears and very slight age marks. It stands comparison well with a German cap of the same era, although you rarely see them in their boxes.
